Abstract

Background: Infantile colic is one of the most common problems encountered by primary care physicians and childcare providers. Prevalence rates in prospective studies varies from 3% to 28% and in retrospective studies from 8% to 40%.Udarshoola (colic) as the child rejects the breast, cries, sleeps in supine position, has stiffness of abdomen, (feeling) of cold and perspiration of face. Whereas other texts described, the significant factor responsible for the genesis of Shoola as Vata (vayu), detailed etiopathogenesis about 8 types of Shoola, and the clue for the management of Udarshoola.Udarshoola is considered to be the foremost complaint noticed in the infant, which is expressed by incessant cry that disturbs the mother, care-takers and whole family. If not attended to, it can impact on poor weight gain and poor quality of life in infants. Number of traditional remedies, standard prescriptions to manage colic in infants are in vogue. However drugs with standard prescriptions are associated with adverse effects. Traditional prescriptions containing jeera, dil seeds, methi does give relief though are not scientifically documented. Recently probiotics are being used as part of scientific advancements to treat infantile colic.Thus this study aim to explore a traditional prescriptions containing  Ajamoda arka with Yavakshara along with buttermilk on infantile colic. Methods:  Prospective, open-label, randomized controlled clinical trial sample size 50 Participants in the trial group will receive Ajamoda arka with yavakshara 0.5 ml TID with 1ml takra in the age of 1 to 3 months and 1 ml TID with 2 ml takra in the age of 4 to 5 months for a period of 15 days with takra (buttermilk) anupana. Similarly, control group will receive Shatapushpa arka in the similar dose. Conclusion: The study demonstrates efficacy of ajamoda arka with yavakshara  and shatapushpa arka in the management of vataj udarshoola,infantile colic
