Acharya Sushrutokta Gana and their Pharmacological actions- A review

The grouping of the drug is seen since in Samhita as well as in Nighantu times. It helps to remember the drugs along with their pharmacological actions. There are 38 groups as per Acharya Sushruta. Each group start with the name of the first drug. Viz; Vidarigandhadi Gana, Aragwadhadi Gana, Saalasaradi Gana, Varunadi Gana, Viratarvadi Gana, Rodhradi Gana, Arkadi Gana, Surasadi Gana, Mushkakadi Gana, Pippalydi Gana, Eladi Gana, Vachadi Gana, Haridradi Gana, Shyamadi Gana, Brihatyadi Gana, Patoladi Gana, Kakolydi Gana, Ushakadi Gana, Sarivadi Gana, Anjanadi Gana, Parushakadi Gana, Priyangwadi Gana, Ambasthadi Gana, Nyagrodhadi Gana, Guduchadi Gana, Utpaladi Gana, Mustadi Gana, Triphala, Trikatu, Amalakyadi Gana, Trapwadi Gana, Lakshadi Gana, Laghu Panchamula, Brihat Panchamula, Dashamula, Valli Panchamula, Kantaka Panchamula, and Trina Panchamula. Each group contains more than 3-4 drugs. Here an attempt is made to highlight the drugs along with their pharmacological actions. Further scope of study is to evaluate the pharmacological activities with modern animal experimentation.
