Scientific review on Virechana Dravya (Purgative Drugs) of Ashtanga Hridaya Samhita

Panchakarma deals with five purificatory therapies for the elimination of vitiated Doshas, maintenance of health and rejuvenation of the body. Snehan, Swedana, Brimhana, Rukhsana, Lekhana, Sthambhana etc. therapies are administered in healthy people and patients for maintaining health and radical cure of diseases. Virechana Karma is one amongst the Panchakarma, wherein purgation is induced by drugs and it is mainly indicated in the Pittaja disorders. In the Kalpasthana of Astanga Hridaya, the second chapter is mentioned for Virechana Dravyas and its related Kalpa. Different Virechana Dravya were found after screening other Sthanas of Ashtanga Hridaya Samhita with Arunadatta and Hemadri Tika. Web resources with keywords such as Virechana Dravya, Virechanopaga Dravya, Ashtanga Hridaya Samhita and Dravya Guna textbooks used to clarify the controversy of various Dravya mentioned in the Samhita. For the first time in this article a comprehensive scientific review has been carried out to compile fourteen Virechana and Virechanopaga Dravya from Ashtanga Hridaya Samhita and botanical identification, part used, current availability, indications, current use in practice etc. are critically analyzed in various aspects.
