Panchakarma plays an important role in detoxifying the body. Virechana (purgation therapy) is indicated in Pittaja and Pitta associated with Vata or Kaphaja disorders. In the Kalpa Sthana of Charaka Samhita, 6 chapters are mentioned for Virechana Dravya (purgative drugs) and its respective Kalpa. Various laxatives were also found after examining other Sthanas of Charaka Samhita with Chakrapani Tika. Web sources with keywords like Virechana Dravya (purgative drugs), Virechanopaga Dravya, and Charaka Samhita and Dravya Guna textbooks are used to clarify the controversy over various Dravya (drugs) mentioned in Samhita. For the first time in this article, a comprehensive scientific review has been done to compile 78 Virechana and Virechanopaga Dravya from Charaka Samhita and critically analyzed the various aspects related to the botanical identification, part used, current availability, indications, current use in practice, etc.
